The Last Sunderland Flying Boat
An Appreciation of ML814 - Islander. A video tribute to this superb aircraft whilst based at Calshot during 1991/9. Maintenance, launching, many take-offs, landings and much more. Anecdotes and comments from many of those involved with the aircraft, which is now owned by Kermit Weeks, and based in Florida. ML814 was built in 1944 at Short Brothers' factory, Belfast and was in service with 201, 422 and 330 squadrons during the war. The plane served with 5 Squadron RNZAF (NZ 4108) 1953 to 1963 and brought medical facilities to the Islands of the South Pacific. Adapted to a civil airliner, providing an essential link between Lord Howe Island and Australia with Ansett Flying Boat Services. Owners: Charles Blair (Antilles Air Boats), then Edward Hulton, before being sold to Kermit Weeks and flown to Florida in 1993.
